The above census list was compiled by Martha A. Churchill from certain computerized lists compared with a reproduction of the original handwritten documents.

In this list, SWM means Single White Male.  That usually means the person’s relationship or role is unclear, and this designation is the best that can be done.  SWF means Single White Female.

The far right column is for interesting occupations, and to report a Hired Hand (“H”) or a Servant (“S”).  In every case, the Hired Hand was a man or young man, while the Servant was a woman or girl.

Other occupations noted in the far right column include retail, physician, blacksmith, jeweler, cooper, etc.  The vast majority of occupations for males in this census was “farmer” so a variation from that was an item of note.

The far left column shows the household number.   The census taker went from house to house, numbering them from 1 to 471.  By ordering this Census list according to the far left column, it is possible to see all the people living in any one household, including persons with different last names. It is also possible to see who the neighbors were.

In 1880, there was no incorporated Village of Milan, but the census taker made his own assessment who was in the “Village” and who was not.  This census list includes the census-taker’s viewpoint on that issue, as well as the “Village” of Mooreville.

1880 York Township Census

Washtenaw County, Michigan

Prepared by Martha A. Churchill

The 1880 York Township census records the lives of 1717 people.  By my count, there were 471 separate households.  Hardly any households contained just one person.  The vast majority of households contained several people, and it was common for 6-12 people to share one home, including the hired hands, an elderly mother, and the servant.

The first section provides the census results alphabetically by last name, based on the head of household.  In a few cases, a hired hand or other person with a different last name was indexed into it; but in many cases I did not do so.  Therefore, if you are looking for an individual who was working as a “servant” or who was a “nephew” in the household, and had a different last name, you would not find your person alphabetically here.

The other section has the census results in number order.  The census taker, Almeron C. Hathaway, started out at one end of York Township and finished at his own house, going door to door, road by road, street by street.  This is a fascinating way to look at the census, because you can see which households were neighbors.  The census taker likely zig-zagged back and forth across the road, from house to house, and sometimes you will see that every-other-house has the same last name.

Using the numerical census, you will see that the Village of Milan starts with 388 and ends with 441.  The next person starts the Village of Mooreville, 442 through 454.

In fact, there was no official “Village” of Milan or Mooreville.  Hathaway was just using his sense of where the urban areas were located as opposed to farmland.

I created a separate column on the far right to indicate “H” for hired hand, and “S” for servant.  These people were not always labeled as such.  I felt that a teenaged girl living in a home full of small children, where she was not apparently related to them, she was probably a servant.  Besides H and S, that third column contains information about occupations other than the usual.

Approximately 100% of the wives were given the occupation “Housekeeper,” therefore I did not consider that to be an occupation.  If the woman had some other occupation, I made a note of it.  Men’s occupations other than farmer or labor are also noted.  The census taker used the letter “B” to indicate a person’s race was “black.”

Errors occur in this type of work.  First of all, I made mistakes reading and transcribing it.  Also, someone else read the handwriting and that person could make mistakes.  In some cases the original handwriting was darned near illegible to our modern eyes, especially after years of wear could affect the census book.
